  16. <p>     Despite a well-publicized bout with alcoholism ten years
  17. ago, Texas State Treasurer Ann Richards had become a rising
  18. star among Democrats. Until several days ago, she was a front
  19. runner in this week's Democratic primary. Then Richards'
  20. campaign was jolted by her refusal to answer questions on
  21. whether she has ever used illegal drugs. Replying, she
  22. contended, could discourage other addicts from seeking help. Her
  23. Democratic opponents, former Governor Mark White and Attorney
  24. General Jim Mattox, were quick to attack Richards for her
  25. evasiveness. If she becomes the nominee, she can expect a far
  26. tougher going-over from the Republicans.
